On January 22, Ukraine celebrates the Day of Unity.

On this day in 1918, the IV Universal of the Ukrainian Central Rada proclaimed independence, and a year later, in 1919, on the same day, the official unification of the Ukrainian People’s Republic and the Western Ukrainian People’s Republic took place on Sophia Square in Kyiv. Thus, for the first time in many centuries, the historical Ukrainian regions united into one state.
