October 28 is the day of liberation of Ukraine from fascist invaders. The holiday was established in accordance with the Presidential Decree of October 20, 2009.
On this day, the memory of the soldiers who died in the battles for the liberation of Ukraine and the population that suffered from the actions of the fascist occupiers is traditionally commemorated.
Military actions during the Second World War took place on the territory of Ukraine for 40 months – from June 22, 1941 to the end of October 1944. In 1941–1944, the main forces of the Wehrmacht were concentrated on Ukrainian soil – from 57.1 to 76.7% of the total number of divisions. 607 of them were destroyed on the territory of Ukraine. In total, the expulsion of the Nazis from Ukraine lasted almost 700 days. At the end of 1942, on December 18, the first settlement was liberated – the village of Pivnivka in the Luhansk Region. More than 50 million people died in World War II. Ukraine lost about 14 million people in this war, including those who were killed, died of hunger and disease, victims of concentration camps, deported, evacuated, forced to emigrate.
